Joshua Hostetter

Fire Engineer and IAFF Local 1270 President

Last Alarm: September 10th, 2025

It is with a heavy heart that we share the passing of Fire Engineer and IAFF Local 1270 President Joshua Hostetter, who passed unexpectedly on the evening of September 10, 2025.

A firefighter, engineer, and leader, Josh devoted his life to serving the Salinas community with selflessness and compassion. His fire service journey began in high school at Bear River High School in Grass Valley, where he joined the Regional Occupation Program (ROP) and spent time at the local firehouse. Inspired by his grandfather and uncle, both firefighters, Josh knew early on that this was the career he was meant to pursue.

After graduating, his family relocated to the Monterey Peninsula, and Josh went on to serve three seasons with CalFire before joining the Salinas Fire Department in 2002. Over the next 23 years, he became a steady presence in the department, especially at Station 4 on Williams Road, where his leadership and dedication were deeply felt.

Josh served not only as a firefighter and engineer, but also as the longtime president of the Salinas Firefighters Association, where he tirelessly advocated for his colleagues and the safety of the community. His role on the Critical Incident Stress Management Team reflected his deep empathy and understanding of the emotional toll the job can take, as he worked to support fellow first responders in their most difficult moments.

In recognition of his outstanding service and leadership, Josh was recently honored as Citizen of the Year by the Salinas Valley Chamber of Commerce—a testament to the profound impact he made both inside and outside the firehouse.

Beyond his career, Josh’s greatest joy was his family. He was a devoted son, husband, and the proud father of four daughters, passing on the same values of service, compassion, and responsibility that defined his life.

As we grieve this tremendous loss, we invite our community to come together in support of Josh’s wife and daughters. All donations made through this page will go directly to his family to provide care and support during this difficult time.

We are forever grateful for Josh’s 23 years of service, his leadership, and the countless lives he touched. His legacy of love, dedication, and service will continue to inspire us all.
